 Dillon Tribune All-Conference story

Dillon reaps All-Conference honors
Dillon Tribune, Nov. 28--Members of the Dillon Beavers football program won or shared in all three major awards and claimed 13 first team and eight second team slots on the Southwestern "A" All-Conference football team. The rosters were constructed via a vote by league coaches.

Montana Coaches Association Hall of Fame Coach Terry Thomas was named "Coach of the Year." Thomas and his staff led the Beavers to a perfect conference record, resulting in the homefield advantage throughout the class "A" playoff. Dillon finished the season 9-2, with both losses coming to eventual state champion Billings Central.

Senior inside linebacker Jake McGinley and junior quarterback Bryce Carver were honored as the "Most Valuable Player," on defense and offense, respectively. McGinley shared the defensive award with Tucker Hoge of Frenchtown, while Carver earned Co-MVP offensive honors with Hamilton running back Ryan Turley.

McGinley led the Beavers and the conference in total tackles with 136. Twelve of those tackles were for a negative 45 yards. He added three interceptions and one fumble recovery to his impressive statistic line.

Carver led the prolific offensive attack with a 58.4 completion percentage. He completed 195 of 334 passes on the season for 2,657 yards or an average of 241.5 yards per game. He tossed 26 touchdown passes and 17 interceptions. Carver added 578 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns on 159 carries. Carver was also a first team free safety and second team punter.

Other first team Beavers were offensive center and defensive end Corey Eisenzimer; offensive tackle and defensive end Adam LaPierre; tight end and strong safety Jackson Berkram; kicker, outside linebacker and second team offensive tackle Conor Hartz; offensive guard and second team outside linebacker Brock Myllymaki; and wide receiver, and second team cornerback and return specialist Michael Allen.

Second team picks were receiver Stephen Resset, fullback Cody Russell, and defensive lineman Alex Boka.

Billings Central belts Beavers, 28-13
By Bill Foley, of The Montana Standard - 11/18/2007

DILLON — Jake McGinley called it a war.

The Rams called it their last chance.

The Billings Central football team, which is powered by 22 seniors, made the most of that final opportunity in an all-out battle Saturday afternoon at Vigilante Field.

With the Class A team of the decade standing in their way, the Rams won their first state title since 1968 with a 28-13 win over the two-time defending champion Dillon Beavers.

“We’re not going to let them come into our house and push us around. That was our motto for the week,” said McGinley, a senior linebacker for the Beavers. “We wanted to go out there and take it too them.

“I’m so proud of everybody. They just played with their hearts the whole game.”

That heart, however, could only do so much.

The Rams forced five turnovers, including a Jake Chilton interception returned for a touchdown, and the BC wing-T offense bullied its way to 290 yards on the ground on the way to completing the 12-0 season.

“We were just being patient, controlling the clock, controlling the ball, limiting their opportunities,” BC coach Jim Stanton said. “If you give them a lot of opportunities, that’s not a good thing for our defense.”

The Ram offense controlled the line of scrimmage, while the BC defense turned up the heat on junior quarterback Bryce Carver and the Dillon spread passing attack.

Carver was picked off four times — twice by Chilton and once by Aleksie Grosulak and Jordan Heringer. A handful of passes slipped out of his hand, including the one Chilton returned for a touchdown to give the Rams a two-touchdown advantage midway through the third quarter.

“I couldn’t grip it,” Carver said. “I jammed my thumb.”

After the game, Carver’s right thumb was swelling from an injury he sustained playing safety in the first quarter.

“He sure did a great job of competing,” Dillon coach Terry Thomas said of his quarterback, who picked off a pass of his own. “He made some really nice reads, just a couple of the balls didn’t quite get to the receivers.”

The Rams sacked Carver four times and rushed his throws all afternoon. They also batted down two passes at the line of scrimmage.

“They’re really big, really fast,” Carver said. “They’re a really good team — obviously the best in the state.”

Billings Central, which used three big plays to beat Dillon 20-6 on Sept. 7 in Dillon, never trailed.

Senior Jake Pelczar, who ran for 180 yards on 29 carries, busted through the middle for a 10-yard touchdown with 5 minutes, 17 seconds left in the first half. The score capped an eight-play, 58-yard drive.

The Rams used Pelczar on the trap play up the middle, especially a first half in which the senior ran for 11 yards.

“The middle was just open and when it’s open, you just go,” Pelczar said. “We just really settled in today. I think last time (Dillon) thought maybe that’s why we won, big plays. But (Saturday) we really put some drives together and just beat them. We were more physical today. Nothing fancy, just football.”

Dillon answered quickly.

Senior Jackson Berkram used one hand to snare a 10-yard Carver pass. Then Berkram bounced off a couple of tacklers to turn it into a 44-yard gain to the BC 15-yard line.

Two plays later, senior Michael Allen hauled in a 15-yard TD strike from Carver to tie the game at 7.

The Rams took the lead for good with 7:10 left in the first half.

On third-and-goal from the Dillon 8, Alex Bushman caught a Heringer pass and dove to the pylon for a 14-7 lead.

The score capped a 10-play drive that started at the BC 11.

Two plays after Chilton’s pick made it 21-7, Chilton picked off his second pass to set up Heringer’s second touchdown of the game.

Heringer hit Pelczar for a 19-yard touchdown on third-and-14 to make it 28-7 with 3:20 left in the third quarter.

Dillon, however, didn’t fold.

The Beavers needed just five plays to drive 73 yards for a score, capped by a 10-yard pass from Carver to Berkram.

The scoring play was set up by a 32-yard run by McGinley.

The extra point failed, though, leaving the Beavers still 15 points behind.

Dillon’s last chance saw the Beavers drive from their own 13 to the BC 24.

The drive featured the hit of the day when Chilton blew up a screen play with a vicious collision with McGinley, who left the game briefly.

“I haven’t got hit like that in a long time,” said McGinley, who plays sparingly at running back after breaking his ankle last season. “It kind of gave me a little dinger in the head. I got hit a few times. But it’s nothing some ice won’t handle.”

The Beavers were forced to go for it on fourth-and-five from the 24, and Ryan Huppert sacked Carver on what turned out to be Dillon’s last offensive play with 5:24 left in the game.

“I was trying to throw it,” said Carver, who passed for 198 yards and ran for 32. “I couldn’t get set to throw it because they were right on me.”

The sack was Huppert’s third of the game. Casey McMillan had the other, which went for an 11-yard loss on Dillon’s first play from scrimmage to set the tone.

“If you let him just sit back there he’ll pick apart a defense,” McMillan said.

The Rams killed the clock by driving to the Dillon 11-yard line. Instead of going for another score with nearly two minutes left, BC took a knee three times to end the game.

“We had a few too many turnovers to win,” Thomas said. “We really felt like the defense did a great job of battling. On offense we moved the ball at times. We just never really got into a real rhythm for any length of time.”

Carver used six receivers, with Berkram’s six receptions for 94 yards leading the way.

“They were putting two people up front on our outside receivers and three people back,” Carver said, explaining why he hooked up with Berkram six times. “It kind of opened our slots in the hole for us.”

That also helped limit Allen, the team’s leading receiver during the season.

Allen, who dislocated a finger in warmups, caught three passes for 29 yards. His injured finger likely played a role when what looked like a 45-yard TD pass down the sideline slipped out of his grasp.

Senior Tim Goins caught three passes for 22 yards, senior Stephen Resset caught two for 19, junior Tanner Strozzi hauled in a pair for 18 and senior Cody Russell caught one pass for 16 yards.

“The kids did a really nice job — even late in the second half — of competing on the line of scrimmage, making tackles and not giving up,” Thomas said. “The battle in the trenches was just tough as nails. It was a great job by both teams.”

The Beavers ended the season at 9-2.

The game was the last in a Dillon uniform for Allen, Goins, Resset, Russell, Berkram, McGinley, Kal Stoddard, Brock Myllymaki, Stephen Pulaski, Ben Christiensen, Josh Keltz, Corey Eisenzimer, Adam LaPierre, Robert Sawyer, Alex Boka and Conor Hartz.

“I’m so proud of everyone,” McGinley said. “Starting from day one we just played. We played.”
